The week has started disappointingly after the excitement of Liverpool’s impressive pre-season finale performances.
The pursuit of Martin Zubimendi has come to an end, and it now seems unlikely that Liverpool will seek an alternative No.6 in this transfer window.
Instead, Liverpool will assess their current midfield options before their upcoming match against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
According to Paul Joyce in The Times, “Liverpool is unlikely to shift focus to another midfield target at this stage since Zubimendi was specifically sought for his fit with the desired No.6 profile for Slot’s team. Liverpool made a move for Zubimendi based on his willingness to leave this window.”
The club believes they have sufficient options with Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones potentially partnering Alexis Mac Allister, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold can also play in that role. Wataru Endo, being more of a defensive No.6, doesn’t seem to align with the new coach’s requirements as he hasn’t been favored during pre-season. Additionally, 17-year-old Trey Nyoni is highly regarded.
The report also notes that Liverpool are keeping an eye on Georgian international Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is valued at over £30 million.
What should Liverpool do next?
We’ve been clear that Martin Zubimendi was our top choice for the No.6 position in Arne Slot’s system.
Given the current situation, Liverpool faces a challenging position regarding recruitment.
Firstly, is there a viable alternative to Zubimendi that we could now pursue?
If so, can Liverpool effectively negotiate a transfer with a player who might see themselves as a backup option? Additionally, the transfer fee could become a sticking point, as the selling club may take advantage of our more urgent situation as the new season approaches.
