Liverpool might still transfer Joe Gomez within the next month. In late June, the defender was on the verge of moving to Newcastle as Liverpool tried to secure Anthony Gordon in return.
James Pearce from The Athletic reported that discussions about Gomez’s transfer were so progressed that even payment terms were negotiated.
Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, had consented to sell the England international for £45 million, contingent on Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon being transferred to Liverpool for £75 million. These were two separate transactions, each dependent on the other.
The Magpies needed to complete transactions to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations before the June 30 deadline and succeeded without selling any of their key players.
More than a month later, Pearce reports that there has been little change regarding the futures of both players. Liverpool remains interested in Anthony Gordon and is still open to transferring Joe Gomez.
Gordon is thought to have been swayed by Liverpool’s interest in June, but it is uncertain if the Reds will pursue him again, as Newcastle plans to retain him and offer a new contract.
Both players are expected to return to their clubs next week for the 2024/25 season after an extended break following their England duties at Euro 2024, which should provide more clarity about their futures.
Joe Gomez will soon evaluate his future at Liverpool upon his return, having come close to leaving the club in June.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool is not actively seeking to move the defender on, and he remains one of Arne Slot’s four primary centre-backs.
The 27-year-old was vital for Jurgen Klopp last season, with his versatility addressing various defensive issues throughout the 2023/24 campaign.
Gomez played in all positions across Liverpool’s defense and made 51 appearances, which earned him a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.
While Gomez is a valuable asset for Slot, if he seeks guaranteed playing time this season, the Dutch coach is unlikely to obstruct his departure.
