Liverpool is reportedly considering rekindling their interest in former Everton player Anthony Gordon by proposing a player-exchange deal with Newcastle. It is said that Gordon would be open to joining the select group of players who have represented both Merseyside clubs.
Earlier in the transfer window, Gordon was strongly linked with Liverpool. However, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has stated that no discussions have occurred between the two Premier League teams.
Liverpool is eager to acquire a new winger, especially given the uncertain futures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah. Although Gordon has been impressive for Newcastle, the club might consider selling him to stay compliant with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
The Sunday World reports that Liverpool is contemplating an offer that would involve including players in the deal for Gordon. The Reds are said to have been encouraged to pursue the 23-year-old more aggressively.
Gordon’s history with Everton would make a move to Liverpool a contentious issue on Merseyside. Nonetheless, it is reported that he has admired former Liverpool great Steven Gerrard since childhood.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is keen to retain Gordon. The forward, who recorded 23 goals and assists last season, has been granted additional time off after his participation in Euro 2024 with England.
Howe expressed his strong desire to keep Gordon, saying, “I’d welcome Anthony back with three arms if I had them. He’s a crucial part of our plans.” He emphasized that there have been no negative or contentious discussions about Gordon over the summer, praising his dedication to Newcastle. Howe also mentioned that Gordon needs a bit of rest but will be ready to contribute fully upon his return, stating, “We didn’t want to lose anybody.”
