Arsenal fans have shared mixed reactions to new signing Mikel Merino following his debut in the 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain.
Merino joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad on August 27 for a reported £31.6 million, but a shoulder injury sustained in training delayed his debut. He finally took the field in the 64th minute against PSG, replacing Thomas Partey and partnering with Declan Rice in midfield.
However, his performance drew criticism from some fans on social media. One commented, “Honestly, Merino looks the weakest in that midfield,” while another noted the team lost control after his substitution. Some humorously suggested that Real Sociedad had “sold a lemon.”
On the other hand, not all reactions were negative. A supporter defended him, stating, “Less than 10 mins into his debut after barely touching a ball in a month.”
Once fully fit, Merino is expected to play a key role for Arsenal, drawing on his extensive experience from 242 appearances at Real Sociedad. Manager Mikel Arteta expressed confidence in Merino’s technical ability and leadership when he was signed, and fans are hopeful he will prove his worth as he settles into the team.
