Deco is considering buying back the former Barcelona player, the player will form a strong duo with Gavi in midfield

Joan Laporta and Deco are actively working on Barcelona’s squad planning and are exploring the possibility of bringing back a former player who had difficulties settling in during his first stint at the club.

Currently, Barcelona is leading La Liga with 21 points from eight matches, suffering only one loss against Osasuna, which puts them four points behind Real Madrid.

As reported by El Nacional, young midfielder Nico González, who is excelling at Porto, is a potential candidate for a return. A product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, Nico left the club initially due to a lack of regular playing time.

After a loan at Valencia, he transferred to Porto in 2023 for €8.5 million, with Barcelona retaining 40% of any future sale and a €30 million buy-back option until 2025.

This season, under coach Vítor Bruno, Nico has seen significant improvement, featuring in all nine official matches so far, scoring three goals and assisting once, as he plays in a more advanced role that allows him to excel closer to the goal.

Barcelona is closely monitoring his development, with Deco acknowledging his potential. Current coach Hansi Flick is also likely to appreciate the prospect of Nico returning, as he could form a dynamic midfield partnership with Gavi, enhancing the squad’s depth and versatility.
