Football pundit and ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has advised the Reds on what they need to achieve to secure the Premier League title this season.
Liverpool is the sole team in England and Europe’s top five leagues that did not make a new signing this summer. Despite this, the summer at Anfield has been busy, even though no new players were added.
The club experienced significant changes, including the departure of manager Jurgen Klopp and the appointment of Arne Slot as his successor. Additionally, their transfer pursuit of Anthony Gordon did not come to fruition.
After nearly finalizing a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, the transfer fell through at the last moment when Zubimendi chose to remain with his current club.
With the new season approaching, The Reds will start without any new signings. Murphy believes they need two key additions to compete for the league title. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said, “I expect them to finish in the top four, but I don’t think they can surpass City. I don’t think they can win the title with the current squad. They would benefit from two significant new signings—specifically a center-back and a holding midfielder.
When comparing last season’s top teams with players like Rodri and Declan Rice, Liverpool lacks that level of dominance in the midfield. Although Wataru Endo and Alexis MacAllister showed promise at times, Liverpool doesn’t have a consistently dominant presence in midfield.
They will be greatly disappointed about missing out on Zubimendi, especially since they believed the deal was almost completed. It’s unusual for Liverpool not to finalize such a transfer.”
They missed out on [Romeo] Lavia and [Moises] Caicedo last year, and now they’ve missed out on Zubimendi as well. This isn’t ideal, especially since they need a player in that position. The former Liverpool midfielder believes that Slot’s team has the potential to reach the top four in the Premier League.
Danny Murphy wants Liverpool to sign a midfielder and has highlighted the contrast between Liverpool and last season’s top contenders, Manchester City and Arsenal, who both boast strong midfielders in Rodri and Rice. It was clear from watching Liverpool last season that these midfield positions need to be addressed this summer. Failing to do so could jeopardize their chances of winning the league, given that their squad is otherwise well-equipped.
