Liverpool and their new manager, Arne Slot, may be facing troubling news with the Premier League’s return approaching.
Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has cut short his international duty, raising concerns among fans about a possible injury.
The international break spans this and next week, featuring Nations League matches for European teams and World Cup qualifiers for South American nations.
Additionally, European U21 teams are competing in the latest Elite League fixtures.
Elliott will not participate in these fixtures, having withdrawn from the England U21 squad. The team, now under interim manager Ben Futcher following Lee Carsley’s promotion to manage the senior squad for Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, has not specified the nature of Elliott’s injury.
However, they have indicated that he has returned to Liverpool for “further medical treatment.”
Elliott is among several players who have returned to their clubs, with Ipswich’s Omari Hutchinson and Aston Villa’s Jaden Philogene also pulling out of the squad.
An England statement announces: “Matthew Cox, Tom Fellows, and Jonathan Rowe have joined the England U21 squad ahead of their matches against Northern Ireland and Austria.
“Harvey Elliott, Omari Hutchinson, Jaden Philogene, and Sam Tickle, who initially reported to St George’s Park earlier this week, have returned to their clubs for further medical assessment.
“Adam Wharton will also miss the upcoming fixtures, staying with his club on medical advice.”
Elliott has not started any of Liverpool’s first three Premier League games under new manager Arne Slot. His only involvement so far was a brief eight-minute appearance off the bench during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Brentford, with Slot opting for different midfielders at the start of the season.
