Moises Caicedo has shared his reasons for turning down a move to Liverpool, despite their interest, and choosing Chelsea instead. Last summer, Caicedo was at the center of a transfer battle between the two Premier League clubs after he decided to leave Brighton.
Chelsea, who had long admired the Ecuadorian, initially declined to meet Brighton’s asking price, allowing Liverpool to make a £111 million offer that was accepted. However, Chelsea then agreed to a £115 million deal with Brighton, leading Caicedo to ultimately choose Stamford Bridge, potentially setting a British transfer record.
Caicedo has now explained why it was challenging for him to ignore Liverpool’s interest.
“It was very challenging,” he said. “Very challenging. Liverpool is a great team, and so is Chelsea. However, Chelsea supported me through several months and tough times when Brighton was reluctant to let me go.
“Making the decision was tough, but I was certain that I wanted to join Chelsea.”
After losing out to Chelsea for Romeo Lavia, Liverpool addressed their defensive midfield needs by signing Japan’s captain, Wataru Endo, from Stuttgart for £16.25 million.
Caicedo had a rough start to last season but improved after Christmas, helping Chelsea secure a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. He also played a significant role in the League Cup final, where Chelsea was narrowly defeated 1-0 by Liverpool at Wembley in February.
